Margaret Mary Donigan, OP
February 22, 1904 – July 13, 2001
I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I shall live.
Psalm 23
Sr. Margaret Mary Donigan died suddenly on July 13th in the 76th year
of her religious profession. She had been a resident of Mohun Health Care
Center sine 1996.
Sister was born in 1904 in New York City and moved to Columbus, where
she attended St. Mary of the Springs Academy. In 1923, after her graduation
from the Academy, she entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters.
Sister Margaret Mary pronounced her vows in 1925.
Her teaching career began at St. Mary’s, Lancaster, where she had
sixth grade from 1925 to 1927. From 1927 to 1933, she taught elementary
grades from second to sixth at St. Francis, Newark, Ohio , after which
she returned to the Academy to teach elementary and high school from 1933-
1944. For the next three years, she was principal at St. Aloysius in Wilmerding,
Pennsylvania. Then, she returned to the Motherhouse to hold the position
of Novice mistress from 1947 to 1950.
After her term as Novice Mistress, she was superior and principal at
St. Anne’s in Santa Fe, New Mexico, for six years. From 1956 to
1963, she taught sixth grade at St. Lawrence’s in Pittsburgh. For
the next thirty-three years, she served at St. Andrew’s in Flushing,
ten of these years as superior.
At the age of 92, Sister decided she was too frail to continue to live
independently, so she returned to Columbus to the Health Care Center.
Sister has no immediate family remaining, but she leaves many dear friends
and former students.
Memorial gifts in Sister Margaret Mary's honor
may be sent to Dominican Sisters, St. Mary of the Springs, 2320 Airport
