October 12, 1920 – December 10, 2001
I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I shall live
Psalm 23
Sister Marie Bernard Kennedy, O.P. died at Mohun Health Care Center on
December 10, 2001, in the 62nd year of her religious profession.
Born on October 12, 1920 to Helen and Bernard Kennedy of London, Ohio,
Mary Jane
attended St. Patrick School in London and St. Mary of the Springs Academy.
She earned a B.S. degree from St. Mary of the Springs College and an M.S.
from Notre Dame, with both degrees in chemistry.
Sister taught elementary school in New York and Steubenville for nine
years before being assigned to teach science and math at St. Mary’s,
New Haven; St. Francis, Newark; St. Thomas, Braddock; Newark Catholic,
Newark; and Bishop Watterson, Columbus.
In later years, she continued to serve in such apostolates as case worker
for Catholic Social Services in Columbus, receptionist at the St. Francis/St.
George Hospital in Cincinnati, and lab services assistant at Ohio Dominican
College.
In 1986, she writes for the Annals, "After living 66+ years without
having any experience using crutches, a fall in May gave me that experience
unexpectedly. It was a humbling experience to have to accept help in many
little details of daily living when I had always managed to be an extremely
independent and a do-for-myself person."
Sister retired to Mohun Health Care Center in 1993. She is survived by
her sister-in-law, Rosemary and nieces and nephews.
Memorial gifts in Sister Marie Bernard's honor
may be sent to Dominican Sisters, St. Mary of the Springs, 2320 Airport
Drive, Columbus, OH 43219.
