Sr.
Mary Elizabeth (Sr. James William)
Flautt, OP
March 26, 1910 – December 29, 2002
I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I shall live.
Psalm 23
On December 29, Sister Mary Elizabeth Flautt died very peacefully at
Mohun Health Care Center where she had been a resident for eleven years.
She was born in 1910 in Somerset, Ohio, daughter of William and Mary Elizabeth
(Kelly) Flautt. She entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters at
St. Mary of the Springs in 1931 from Holy Trinity Parish, and pronounced
her vows in 1933. For the next 60 years she devoted her talents to the
ministry of teaching before failing health made the move to Mohun necessary.
Sister was educated at Holy Trinity School and at St. Mary of the Springs
College. She also studied for a time at the Pius X School of Liturgical
Music at Manhattanville College. Her love of music enriched her life right
to the end, and even when her faculties were failing, her eyes would light
up when she would sit before the keyboard and play “Amazing Grace”
with surprising ability. Almost 40 years of her active ministry were spent
in the schools of the Columbus Diocese, in Newark, Coshocton, Lancaster
and Somerset. She also served in Steubenville, Pittsburgh and New York.
Sister is survived by her devoted sister, Dorothy Baker, of Columbus
as well as by several nieces and nephews.
Memorial gifts in Sister Mary Elizabeth Flautt’s
honor may be sent to Dominican Sisters, St. Mary of the Springs, 2320
Airport Drive, Columbus, OH 43219.
