Sr.
Sylvina Flowers, OP
February 3, 1901 – November 10, 2002
I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I shall live.
Psalm 23
On Feb. 3, 1901, Sr. Sylvina (Helena) Flowers, entered this life, and
on Sunday, Nov. 10, almost 102 years later, she entered eternal life.
Sr. Sylvina was born in New Lexington, the ninth of eleven children of
Simon and Mary Catherine (Emmert) Flowers. Two of her sisters also served
the Lord in Religious life as Franciscan Sisters of Stella Niagara, Sr.
Agneta and Sr. Lea.
Sr. Sylvina was a graduate of New Lexington High School, and five years
later she entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters in Columbus.
She received her undergraduate degree from St. Mary of the Springs and
her M.A. from Duquesne University. Simon Flowers, her father, and Frank,
her brother, were well-known photographers in Perry County, and Sister
continued that interest in photography. In seven European trips she made
with Mary Geist, as her guest, she prepared slide lectures on the major
Marian shrines of Europe.
Sister began her teaching ministry at St. Lawrence School in Pittsburgh
where she taught from 1927 to 1932. She then came to the College of St.
Mary of the Springs and was in the Education Department until 1945. Shortly
thereafter, a branch Post Office was established at the college and Sr.
Sylvina began an interesting career as postmistress of the College Springs
Branch of the U.S. Postal Service, with a salary paid by the U.S. Government.
This branch served not only the college community but the neighborhood
as well.
Sister Sylvina is survived by a number of nieces and nephews and their
families.
Memorial gifts in Sister Sylvina's honor may be
sent to Dominican Sisters, St. Mary of the Springs, 2320 Airport Drive,
Columbus, OH 43219.
