Sr.
Alice (Sr. Lucina) Griffin, OP
July 2, 1901 – February 22, 2002
I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I shall live.
Psalm 23
"I was born July 2, 1901, in Braddock, PA.
Steel dirt was called ‘gold dust.’ The mills gave the
people work and helped them support their families."
This was the hometown background in which Alice Griffin (later, Sr. Lucina)
was born, grew up, and taught for 17 years before she entered the Congregation.
Her sister Virginia (Sr. Helen Marie) had entered the Community first.
At her mother’s request, Alice stayed home to take care of her parents.
While home, she studied at Indiana State Teachers College, Pittsburgh,
and at Duquesne University. In 1947, at 36, she entered the Novitiate.
Her teaching ministry took her to Grosse Pointe, New York City, Pittsburgh,
and Steubenville, where she served as superior from 1968-71, as well as
to Christ the King School in Columbus from 1951 to 1954.
Sr. Alice retired from teaching in 1991 and did community service until
she moved to Mohun Health Care Center in 1998, where she was a beloved
resident.
Sister is survived by a niece, Mary Jo Selby; three nephews, Robert,
Thomas, and Daniel Franko, and several beloved cousins. She was preceded
in death by Sr. Virginia. "[Virginia’s] death was a hard thing,"
Sr. Alice said.. "Having my sister Virginia with me was the high
point in my religious life."
When asked about her vocation, Sister shared the following: "It
wasn’t one bit hard. I was always placid and able to get along.
I always enjoyed whatever I did. In naure, trees adapt to the seasons.
I was like the trees. I adapted. I never looked back. I never thought
of leaving."
Memorial gifts in Sister Alice’s honor may
be sent to Dominican Sisters, St. Mary of the Springs, 2320 Airport Drive,
Columbus, OH 43219.
