Virginia (Sr. Marian) Hayes, OP
September 8, 1908 – November 27, 2002
I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I shall live.

Sister Virginia Hayes, who had been a resident of Mohun Health Care Center
for the past eight years, died there peacefully on Nov. 27. Sister was
born in New York City in 1908, of Irish-born parents, Mark ad Margaret
(O'Brien) Hayes. She attended St. Vincent Ferrer Grade School in Manhattan
and then St. Mary of the Springs Academy where she graduated with the
class of 1926. The following year she entered the Novitiate of the Dominican
Sisters and progessed her vows in 1929.
Sister Marian, as she was known in those years, was gifted with a beautiful
voice and remardable energy. She recived he B.S. in Music Education from
Ohio State University and her Master's degree from Catholic University
in Washington, D.C. For 52 years she used her talents in teaching music
in various schools staffed by the Dominican Sisters. She retired from
teaching in 1981, and spent the next 15 years in her new ministry, working
with troubled youths at Covenant House in Manhattan and at Riker's Island
Prison. Her personal Journals of those days make interesting reading.
Sr. Virginia is survived by her nephews John, Mark and Edward, and a
niece Rosemary. She will also be missed by her dear cousin, Anne Malone
of Massachusetts and a devot friend, Julio Valle of the Bronx, N.Y.
