Psalm 23
Early Friday morning, March 15, 2002, just one day before her 88th birthday,
Sr. Mary Victor McAvey, OP, died in Mohun Health Care Center.
Sister was born Catherine McAvey in New York City in 1914, the daughter
of James J. McAvey from County Longford and Bridget Drury McAvey from
County Roscommon, Ireland. The McAveys were faithful parishioners of St.
Vincent Ferrer Parish in midtown Manhattan.
Catherine graduated from St. Vincent’s Grammar School and from
Dominican Academy. After a few years in the business world, she entered
the Novitiate of St. Mary of the Springs in 1935. She received a B.A.
from St. Mary of the Springs College and an M.A. in mathematics from Fordham
University.
Her teaching ministry of 44 years included 10 years in elementary schools
in Pittsburgh, Newark and Marietta and in New York City and 34 years teaching
high-school mathematics and Spanish in Columbus, McKees Rocks, New York
City, New Haven, and Braddock.
When she retired from teaching, Sr. Mary Victor served 16 years in the
Personnel Office at the Motherhouse. In 1997, she became a resident of
Mohun Health Care Center. After a brief illness, she died peacefully with
the same serenity that was characteristic of her life.
Sister was pre-deceased by her parents and also by her brothers, Rev.
James McAvey, OP; John; and Joseph. Surviving are her brother Vincent
and his wife Rita of Bedford Hills, NY, and a number of devoted nieces,
nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
