Sr.
Mary George O’Brien, OP
December 30, 1909 – September 20, 2002
I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I shall live.
Psalm 23
On Friday morning, September 20, in the presence of her Dominican Sisters,
Sr. Mary George died peacefully in Mohun Health Care Center. Sister was
born in New York City 93 years ago, daughter of George and Mary (Corcoran)
O’Brien who were natives of Ireland. She received her early education
at Annunciation School in Manhattan, and at the Pius X School with the
Madames of the Sacred Heart. In 1931 she came to Columbus, Ohio to the
novitiate of the Dominican Sisters where she has served as a professed
member for 71 years.
In preparation for her teaching ministry she attended St. Mary of the
Springs College and then received a Master’s degree in history from
Fordham University. She spent her fist sixteen years teaching in elementary
schools. Then in 1947 she was appointed superior and principal of Holy
Trinity High School in Somerset, a position she filled for six years.
She was actively engaged in teaching for 62 years, and 41 of those years
were spent in the Archdiocese of New York. From 1959 to 1967 she served
as sub-prioress at Mary Immaculate School, in Ossining and the last 26
years of her active ministry, from 1967 to 1993, were spent in one place,
her beloved Dominican Academy in New York. In 1993 she returned to Columbus
and three years later her health required that she enter Mohun Health
Care Center.
Sr. Mary George will be remembered by her students as well as her sisters
as a gentle woman with a genuine concern for their welfare and a willingness
to be available for them. Hers was a long and faithful life. Sister is
survived by a number of nieces and nephews in New York and in Florida.
Memorial gifts in Sister Mary George’s honor
may be sent to Dominican Sisters, St. Mary of the Springs, 2320 Airport
Drive, Columbus, OH 43219.
