Sr. Mary (Sr. Columbanus) Rutledge, OP

June 11, 1931 – April 24, 2002

I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I shall live.
Psalm 23

Early the morning of April 24, Sr. Mary Rutledge died peacefully in Mohun Health Care Center. Mary was born in Pittburgh and entered the Dominican Sisters in 1949 from St. Lawrence O’Toole Parish there. Her parents, John and Mary (Burke), were from Ireland, and that heritage was a very important and proud part of Mary’s life.

She was educated at St. Lawrence Grade School and High School, and received a B.S. degree from the College of St. Mary of the Springs and an M.Ed. degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

For over 50 years, Sr. Mary (Sr. Columbanus) taught in elementary schools in Columbus, Steubenville, Grosse Pointe, New York, and Pitts-burgh. From 1987-1999, she was on the faculty at Carlow College.

Sr. Mary’s younger sister Anne remains in active ministry. Besides Sr. Anne, Sr. Mary is survived by her sisters, Joan Lachut and Jean O’Shea, her brother John, six nieces and nephews and one grandniece.

Memorial gifts in Sister Mary’s honor may be sent to Dominican Sisters, St. Mary of the Springs, 2320 Airport Drive, Columbus, OH 43219.
