Mary (Sr. Columbanus) Rutledge, OP
June 11, 1931 – April 24, 2002

Early the morning of April 24, Sr. Mary Rutledge died peacefully in Mohun
Health Care Center. Mary was born in Pittburgh and entered the Dominican
Sisters in 1949 from St. Lawrence O’Toole Parish there. Her parents,
John and Mary (Burke), were from Ireland, and that heritage was a very
important and proud part of Mary’s life.
She was educated at St. Lawrence Grade School and High School, and received
a B.S. degree from the College of St. Mary of the Springs and an M.Ed.
degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.
For over 50 years, Sr. Mary (Sr. Columbanus) taught in elementary schools
in Columbus, Steubenville, Grosse Pointe, New York, and Pitts-burgh. From
1987-1999, she was on the faculty at Carlow College.
Sr. Mary’s younger sister Anne remains in active ministry. Besides
Sr. Anne, Sr. Mary is survived by her sisters, Joan Lachut and Jean O’Shea,
her brother John, six nieces and nephews and one grandniece.
