Maryanna Childs, OP
January 16, 1910 – February 17, 2003

On Monday, February 17, Sr. Maryanna Childs died at Mohun Health Care
Center. Hers was a long and full life. During her 73 years as a Dominican
Sister, she shared her rich gift for writing with her Sisters, her students,
and the public. She was a prolific writer, authoring books, including
children’s books; poetry; and articles. Her writing has been recognized
nationally and internationally.
Sr. Maryanna was born in New York City in 1910. Her father, James, was
a native of England and her mother, Clara (Sand) Childs, was from Hobo-ken,
New Jersey. Sister attended St. Vincent Ferrer Grammar School in Manhattan
and then Mary Immaculate boarding school in Ossining, New York.
In 1928, she entered the Dom-inican Novitiate in Columbus, Ohio, and
pronounced her vows in 1930. She earned the B.A. from the College of St.
Mary of the Springs and the M.A. from Catholic University.
Her teaching ministry of 58 years included 10 years in grade school,
8 in secondary, 40 at the College of St. Mary of the Springs, and several
summers in Elderhostel programs.
