Sisters Assumpta Costello, a native of Braddock, PA and a Dominican Sisters
for 68 years, died on Saturday, February 15, at Mohun Health Care Center
where she had been a resident for ten years. Her parents, John and Mary
(Kelly) Costello were born in the Pittsburgh area and raised their family
in St. Thomas Parish in Braddock. Sister attended St. Thomas grade and
high schools and entered the Dominican Novitiate in Columbus in 1933.
She pronounced her vows in 1935 and then served for 58 years in active
ministry before her health necessitated the move to Mohun. She was an
alumna of St. Mary of the Springs College and did her graduate work at
Fairfield University in Connecticut.
In Columbus Sister began her teaching ministry at Holy Name School and
returned in 1959 to serve in St. Mary's Lancaster. She was one of the
early band os Sisters to go to New Mexico where she taught for 10 years,
from 1946 to 1956. Part of that time was in Abiqui, where Georgia O' Keeffe
lived, and the artist was a gracious neighbor and interested in their
work. In 1968 Sister Assumpta was elected to the General Council of the
Dominican Sisters and she served in that administrative post until 1974.
Sister is survived by her nephews, Rev. Bernard Costello of the Pittsburgh
Diocese, John of North Braddock, and William and wife Helen of Westfield,
PA.
