Imelda Meiser, OP
December 4, 1910 – December 29, 2003

On Monday, December 29, 2003, Sr. Imelda Meiser died at Mohun Health
Care Center. Born in Marietta, OH, on December 4, 1910, to George and
Philomena (Walter) Meiser, Sister attended Saint Mary Grade and High Schools
in Marietta, OH. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of
St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1930 and made her Profession of
Vows in 1932. She will be missed by her cousins, her friends and her Dominican
sisters.
Sr. Imelda received her B.S. from St. Mary of the Springs College (now
Ohio Dominican University). Her ministry was primarily in elementary education.
She was stationed in the Columbus Diocese at St. Thomas Zanesville (1944-45,
1951-56), Blessed Sacrament Newark (1956-59), and St. Francis de Sales
Newark (1961-62, 1968-77). She was principal at St. Thomas Zanesville
from 1953 to 1956 and at Blessed Sacrament Newark from 1956 to 1959. Sister
also taught at schools in Grosse Pointe Park (MI), New Haven (CT), Steubenville
(OH), Braddock (PA), Wilmerding (PA), McKees Rocks (PA) and in Middletown
(PA) where she served also as principal from 1962 to 1969.
From 1977 to 1995, before retiring to the Motherhouse and Mohun, Sr.
Imelda tutored remedial reading students at St. Mary Lancaster, where
she made lasting friends among the parishioners. Sister was known for
her artistic ability, especially crocheting and craft-making, and gave
many of her creations to friends and to Mohun for their annual Christmas
in July sale.
