Sr. Augustine Schaub, OP

October 27, 1908– October 19, 2003

I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I shall live.

On Sunday, October 19, 2003, Sr. Augustine Schaub died at Mohun Health Care Center. Sr. Augustine was born in Gahanna, OH, on October 27, 1908 to Charles and O'Tillia (Dehner) Schaub. She is survived by a sister Madeline Dixon and a niece Kathy Dixon of Pataskala, many nieces and nephews and a good friend Marie Lyons of New York. Sister attended Gahanna Grade School and graduated from St. Mary of the Springs Academy. She received her BA degree from St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University). In 1930 she came to the Dominican Novitiate in Columbus, Ohio, and pronounced her vows in 1932. She continued her studies at various higher education institutions and received her Masters in Secondary Education from Notre Dame University.

Sr. Augustine's teaching ministry in the Columbus Diocese included Holy Name in Columbus, St. Francis in Newark and St. Mary in Lancaster. She taught business courses at Mary Immaculate School in Ossining, NY, (1938-47 before returning as principal to Mary Immaculate (1952-1965) during which time she directed the building of a new high school. Edward Mooney of Ossining, former school trustee, remarked on her business acumen and foresight in building the school in Ossining which served the community there.

Called into congregational service, Sr. Augustine then assumed the duties of Development Director for the Dominican Sisters. She, also, served the St. Pius Parish Community, Reynoldsburg, as a Parish Minister (1968-90) before retiring to the Motherhouse and subsequently Mohun Health Care Center.

The viewing will be in the Motherhouse on Wednesday, October 22, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and from 5:00 to 6:45 pm. A Vigil Service of Remembrance will take place from 4:00 to 5:00 pm. The funeral liturgy will follow at 7:00 p.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel. On Thursday, burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery will follow a Farewell Service at 10:00 a.m. in the Motherhouse.
