Lisa Jessel, OP
May 19, 1919 – June 12, 2004

On Saturday, June 12, Sr. Lisa Jessel died at Mohun Health Care Center.
Born in Frankfurt, Germany, on May 19, 1919, Sr. Lisa attended elementary
and high schools in Germany and England. She emigrated to the United States
in 1938, entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of
the Springs in Columbus in 1946, and made her profession of vows in 1947.
Sr. Lisa studied at the Juilliard School of Music, New York City, and
the Julius Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT. She earned a BA from
St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University), an MA
and PhD in German from the Ohio State University, and an MS and PhD in
Music from the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC.
Sr. Lisa taught music at St. Mary of the Springs College from 1947 to
1959, except for one year teaching at St. Lawrence
School, Pittsburgh, PA. She served as a graduate teaching assistant in
the music department at the Catholic University of America, was a graduate
teaching associate in the German department of the Ohio State University
(1969-72), and taught German and music at Albertus Magnus College, New
Haven, CT (1963-68 and 1973-89). Sr. Lisa retired from teaching in 1990
and had resided at Mohun Health Care Center since 1997.
Sr. Lisa is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Cynthia
Jessel; a niece, Peggy Jessel, of Boulder, Colorado; and a nephew, Alfred
Jessel, of California.
