Sr. Mary McCaffrey, OP

August 12, 1911 – April 13, 2004

I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I shall live.

On Wednesday, April 13, Sr. Mary (Eymard) McCaffrey died at Mohun Health Care Center. Born in Carnegie, PA, on August 12, 1911, to James and Mary Agnes (Flaherty) McCaffrey, Sister attended Holy Name Grade School in Columbus and St. Mary of the Springs Academy. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1934 and made her Profession of Vows in 1935. She is survived by two sisters, Sr. Alice McCaffrey OP and Sr. Jane McCaffrey OP of St. Mary of the Springs; a sister-in-law, Sr. Mary Hugh McCaffrey, OSB; and many nieces and nephews.

Sr. Mary received her B.A. from St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University) and her M.A. from the University of Notre Dame. Her ministry for many years was in elementary education. She was stationed in the Columbus Diocese at St. Francis de Sales, Newark (1935-36, 61-64); St. Mary School, Marietta (1936-40); St. Thomas Aquinas, Zanesville (1940-41); St. Mary of the Springs Academy (1941-42); St. Thomas School, Columbus (1943); St. Francis of Assisi, Columbus (1943-44); St. Mary, Lancaster (1954-55), Holy Trinity, Somerset (1955-58); and at Christ the King, Columbus (1958-61). She then taught on the secondary level at Bishop Watterson, Columbus (1964-65, 68-73) and at Wm. V. Fisher Catholic High, Lancaster (1976-78).

Sr. Mary also taught at Holy Name, Steubenville, OH (1944-47); St. Francis de Sales, McKees Rocks, PA (1947-53); St. Clare of Montefalco, Grosse Pointe, MI (1953-54); Northwest Catholic High, West Hartford, CT (1973-76); and St. Mary High School, New Haven, CT (1973-74). From 1976 to 1993, before retiring to the Motherhouse and Mohun, Sr. Mary served the St. Mary of the Springs congregation as Archivist. While archivist, Sister submitted the historical information about the congregation for Volume I of Dominicans at Home in a Young Nation: 1786-1965, published in 2001 in France. Sr. Mary regularly attended the OPUS- and Parable-sponsored archival meetings entitled In Your Keeping for Dominican archivists.
