Leonarda Platt, OP
February 3, 1910– February 6, 2004

On Friday, February 6, Sr. Leonarda Platt died at Mohun Health Care Center,
Columbus, Ohio. Born in Canton, OH, on February 3, 1910, to Alva and Louise
(Monter) Platt, she attended both grade and high school at Saint Francis
de Sales in Newark, OH. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters
of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in January of 1929 and made her
Profession of Vows in 1930.
Sr. Leonarda was always the student. She received her B.A. from St.
Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University) and her M.A.
from The Ohio State University. Sister received a Certificate in Theology
from Providence College, Providence, RI, and did graduate studies at several
other universities. Her ministry was centered in the educational field
where she ministered as a teacher, directress (principal), school supervisor
and director of studies for the Dominican Sisters.
Sr. Leonarda was stationed in the Columbus Diocese at Holy Trinity Somerset
(1933-36) and St. Mary of the Springs Academy (1939-43) and then became
directress of the Academy (1943-1947 and 1953-56). She taught at St. Aloysius,
Wilmerding, PA, (1930-33) and Dominican Academy in New York City (1936-39)
and served as directress of Dominican Academy (1947-53). As school supervisor
(1956-71), Sr. Leonarda gave invaluable help to the sisters and teachers
in schools staffed by the Dominican Sisters. Sister also served in the
Office of Institutional Research for St. Mary of the Springs from 1971
until 1990, when she retired. Sister Leonarda will be missed by her friends,
many former students, and her Dominican sisters.
