Sr. Mary Anthony Schill, OP

March 28, 1919– December 21, 2004

On Tuesday, December 21, 2004, Sr. Mary Anthony Schill died at St. Mary of the Springs Motherhouse. Born in Wilmerding, PA, on March 28, 1919, to Frank and Mary Ann (Smith) Schill, she entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1942 and made her Profession of Vows in 1944.

Sr. Mary Anthony received her B.A. from St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University) and her M.S. from Duquesne University. In her high school ministry, she taught commercial and business courses to many students in the Pittsburgh Diocese and in Columbus and Steubenville in Ohio and in New York City. Sr. Mary Anthony ministered in the Columbus Diocese at Rosecrans High School in Zanesville (1964-65) and at Watterson High School (1970-74). In the Pittsburgh Diocese, she ministered at St. William Grade School (1946-47), St. Lawrence Grade School (1955-58) and St Thomas Braddock High School (1958-1964). In Steubenville, she taught at St. Peter’s Grade School (1944-46) and at Catholic Central High School (1950-54). Sr. Mary Anthony ministered at St. Mary New Haven, CT (1947-50) and at St. Vincent Ferrer in New York City (1965-66).

From 1977 to 2002, before retiring at the Motherhouse, Sr. Mary Anthony served as secretary in the Development Office at St. Mary of the Springs. After her retirement, she continued to serve the Motherhouse community as treasurer. Sr. Mary Anthony was preceded in death by brothers George, Francis, Clarence and Earl, and by a sister, Alice. She is survived by a sister-in-law Cecelia (George) Schill, nephew Anthony Schill, nieces Alice O’Brien and Mary Ann Osman, and a good friend, Rita Sylvester.

The viewing will be at the Motherhouse on Sunday, December 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. A Vigil Service of Remembrance will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. that day. The funeral liturgy will be on Monday, December 27at 11:00 a.m. followed by burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
