Ursulina Welsh, OP
May 23, 1912 – May 15, 2004

On Saturday, May 15, Sr. Ursulina Welsh died at Mt Carmel East Hospital.
She was a resident of Mohun Health Care Center. Born in Braddock, PA,
on May 23, 1912, to Joseph and Mary (Donahue) Welsh, Sister attended St.
William Grade School in East Pittsburgh and did her high school matriculation
at St. William and St. Mary of the Springs Academy. She entered the Novitiate
of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1932
and made her Profession of Vows in 1933. She is survived by two brothers,
Edward and William, both of East Pittsburgh, and a niece and nephew.
Sr. Ursulina received her B.S. from St. Mary of the Springs College
(now Ohio Dominican University). Her ministry was centered in elementary
education. She was stationed in the Columbus Diocese at Holy Name, Columbus
(1954-56) and St. Thomas, Zanesville (1950-51). She was stationed in the
Pittsburgh area at St. Thomas, Braddock (1932, 1943-47, 1951-54); St.
Brendan, Rankin (1933-39, 1945-47, 1960-62, 1964-70); St. Lawrence, Pittsburgh
(1970-71); St. Francis de Sales, McKee’s Rock, (1977); St. William,
East Pittsburgh (1971-1977); and St. Joseph School, Braddock (1980-84).
Sister Ursulina also taught in schools in Steubenville, OH; Marietta,
OH; Grosse Pointe, MI; New York, NY; and Brooklyn, NY.
Sr. Ursulina served as principal of Holy Name, Columbus, OH (1954-56);
St. Mary Grade School, Marietta, OH (1962-64); St. Peter, Steubenville,
OH (1956-60); and St. Brendan, Rankin, PA (1964-70). After retiring from
classroom teaching in 1985, she volunteered at Good Shepherd in Braddock,
PA, until she came to Mohun Health Care Center in 2003.
