Sr. Helen Mary Whelan, OP
(Sr. Camillus)

November 26, 1912 – December 5, 2004

On Sunday, December 5, 2004, Sr. Helen Mary (Sr. Camillus) Whelan died at Mt. Carmel East Hospital. She was born in New York City on November 26, 1912, to James P and Ellen (O’Sullivan) Whelan. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1930 and made her Profession of Vows in 1932.

Sr. Helen Mary received her B.S. from St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University), an M.S. in Education from Fordham University (Bronx, NY), and a certificate as a Library Technical Assistant from the Borough of Manhattan Community College. In the Columbus Diocese, she ministered at Blessed Sacrament in Newark (1960) and at Bishop Watterson High School (1960-61). While in New Haven, CT, Sister taught at St. Mary Parish School (1936) and St. Mary High School (1952-55, 1956-59, 1961-62). She taught at Northwest Catholic High School in West Hartford (1963-65,) and later served as librarian there (1977-83). In The Archdiocese of New York, Sister taught at St. Andrew Avellino School in Flushing (1937-47); St. Vincent Ferrer High School (1955-56, 1965-66); and Mary Immaculate School in Ossining (1966-71). In the Pittsburgh area, she taught at St. William School (1932-33); St. Francis de Sales Grade School (1933-35); and St. Francis de Sales High School (1947-49). From 1971 to 1977 Sister Helen Mary was on the staff of the New York City Archdiocesan School Office and served as librarian at Mt. Alverno in Warwick, NY (1983-84).

Sister was preceded in death by a brother, James F., and a sister, Mary Whelan Maher. She is survived by a first cousin Joseph P. Murray, a cousin, Sister Anita McArdle, and nieces Mary Ellen Harkins, Margaret Whelan and Patty Whelan, as well as cousins in Ireland and England. She retired and did community service at St. Andrew Avellino Convent in Flushing New York before coming to Mohun Health Care Center in 1998.

The viewing will be in the Motherhouse on Thursday, December 9, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. A Vigil Service of Remembrance will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. that day. The funeral liturgy will follow at 7 p.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel. On Saturday, burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery will follow a Farewell Service at 10:00 a.m. in the Motherhouse.
