Mary Leo Brown, OP
April 20, 1914 – August 19, 2005

On Friday, August 19, 2005, Sr. Mary Leo Brown died at Mohun Health Care
Center. She was born in Lancaster, OH, on April 20, 1914, to Clement and
Bertha (Herbert) Brown. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters
of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1937 and made her Profession
of Vows in 1939.
Sr. Mary Leo earned a B.S. from St. Mary of the Springs College (now
Ohio Dominican University). In the Columbus Diocese, she taught at St.
Thomas Aquinas School, Zanesville (1944-45); St. Gabriel School, Columbus
(1956-57); and Sacred Heart School, Coshocton (1981-84). She also served
as receptionist at St. Mary Rectory, Lancaster (1984-89). In the Steubenville
Diocese, Sr. Mary Leo ministered at Holy Name School (1939-1942) and St.
Anthony School (1968-78), and St. Mary School, Marietta (1967-68). She
also taught at St. Mark School, Brooklyn, NY (1942-44); St. Francis de
Sales School, McKees Rocks, PA (1953-56, 1957-61); St. William School,
East Pittsburgh, PA (1961-63); St. Brendan School, Braddock, PA (1963-67);
and St. Clare of Montefalco School, Grosse Pointe Park, MI (1945-53, 1978-81).
Sr. Mary Leo was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters (Dominican
Sister Mary Helen Brown and Rita Snyder) and three brothers (Paul, William
and Herbert). She is survived by sisters Joanne Hardin (Dr. Tom) of Florida
and Mary Therese Horton of California and sisters-in-law Edith Brown and
Julia Brown of Columbus and Barbara Brown of Florida. She had a special
love for her many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and grand nephews.
Sr. Mary Leo retired in 1989 and did support services at St. Mary, Lancaster,
before coming to the Motherhouse in 1996. She became a member of the Mohun
Health Care Community in 2004.
