Sr. Mary Andrew Matesich, OP

On Wednesday, June 15, 2005, Sr. Mary Andrew Matesich died at Mohun Health Care Center, St. Mary of the Springs. Sister was born in Zanesville, Ohio, on May 5, 1939, to Matthew M. and Margaret A. (Gonda) Matesich. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1957 and made her Profession of Vows in 1959.

Sister earned a BA degree from the College of St. Mary of the Springs (now Ohio Dominican University) in 1962, and an MS and PhD in chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley. From 1965 to 1973 she was a professor and chair of chemistry at Ohio Dominican College. Sister Mary Andrew served as academic dean of Ohio Dominican College (now Ohio Dominican University) from 1974 through 1978, and as president of the college from 1978 until 2001.

Sister Mary Andrew was one of the first female members of the Columbus Torch Club and the Columbus Rotary. She served as chair of the Ohio Ethics Commission. A board member of United Way of Central Ohio, Sister Mary Andrew worked on behalf of its Race Relations committee. She was also active with the National Science Foundation. She was the recipient of many awards, including the ODU Distinguished Alumni/ae Award, the Presidential Leadership Award, the YWCA Women of Achievment Award, the Columbus Foundation Award, and the Henry Paley National Award for Advocacy. In 2001 she was one of the 18 women inducted into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame.

During the final years of Sister Mary Andrew’s life, she participated in clinical trials through the James Cancer Hospital, hoping to be of service to other women suffering from metastasized breast cancer.

Sr. Mary Andrew was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her sisters Mildred Edwards of Washington, D.C.; Martha Matesich, residing in Muenster, Germany, and Margaret (“Gigi”) Gruenke in El Salvador; nieces and nephews Jae, Elaine, and Matthew Gruenke, and Jessica and Andrew Seidman.
