Elizabeth Ryan, OP
May 3, 1916– September 25, 2005

On Sunday, September 25, 2005, Sr. Elizabeth (Elizabeth Seton) Ryan died
at Mohun Health Care Center. She was born in Columbus, OH, on May 3, 1916,
to William C. and Helen (Coughlin) Ryan. She entered the Novitiate of
the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1944 and
made her Profession of Vows in 1946. Sister served as Vice-Principal and
English teacher at Newark Catholic High School in Ohio from 1975 to 1978.
Sr. Elizabeth earned her BA from St. Mary of the Springs College (now
Ohio Dominican University) and an MA in Speech and Drama from The Catholic
University of America, Washington, DC. Sister ministered at St. Mary of
the Springs College (now ODU) from 1949 until 1964 where she taught speech
and drama and was well know for her theatrical productions. She taught
English at Bishop Watterson High School in Columbus, OH (1978-84); at
St. Mary High School, New Haven, CT (1946-49) and at Northwest Catholic
High School, West Hartford, CT (1964-70). She served in congregational
ministry in the Office of Continuing Education (1984-89) and the Office
of Human Resources (1989-90) and as sacristan at St. James the Apostle
Parish in Port Richey, FL (1990-91).
Sister was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Father John
Ryan of the Columbus Diocese. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law,
William C. and Mary Ann Ryan, and many nieces and nephews. She was involved
in congregational service at the Motherhouse before coming to Mohun Health
Care Center in 1996.
The viewing will be in the Motherhouse on Wednesday, September 28, from
3 to 4:30 p.m. A Vigil Service of Remembrance will take place from 4:30
to 5:30 p.m. that day, with the wake continuing until 6:30 pm. The funeral
liturgy will be on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. followed by burial in St. Joseph's
Cemetery.
