Sr. Mary Jordan Smock, OP

March 20, 1931 – September 21, 2005

I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I shall live.
Psalm 23

On Wednesday, September 21, 2005, Sr. Mary Jordan Smock died at Mount Carmel East Hospital. She was born in Somerset, OH, on March 20, 1931 to Joseph and Grace (Snider) Smock. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1952 and made her Profession of Vows in 1954.

Sr. Mary Jordan earned a B.S. from St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University) and an M.S. in Education from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. In the Columbus Diocese, she ministered at St. Mary Grade School, Lancaster (1954-56); St. James the Less School (1959-60, 1966-75); and Christ the King School ( 1960-61, 1975-77). Sister also served as a remedial reading teacher at Christ the King (1977-81) and in parish ministry at St. James the Less (1981-95). Sister taught at St. Lawrence O’Toole School in Pittsburgh (1956-59) and at St. Clare of Montefalco School in Grosse Pointe Park, MI (1961-66).

Sr. Mary Jordan served in the Ministry to the Sick Program at St. James the Less Parish from 1995 to 1997 before coming to Mohun Health Care Center. Sr. Mary Jordan loved working with the elderly in her parish ministry because she was able to hear their life stories and share her life story with them. She always hoped to share her wisdom with others so that others would have a true appreciation for religion and for God who is the root of everything we do. Her passion in life had been her faith.

Sister was preceded in death by her parents and a brother James Smock. She is survived by her sister Virginia Lee Clouse, many nieces and nephews and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

The viewing will be in the Motherhouse on Monday, September 26, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. A Vigil Service of Remembrance will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. that day with wake continuing until 6:30 pm. The funeral liturgy will be on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. followed by burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Memorial gifts in Sister Sr. Mary Jordan Smock's honor may be sent to Dominican Sisters, St. Mary of the Springs, 2320 Airport Drive, Columbus, OH 43219.
