Mary Stephen DeCesare, OP

On Monday, July 10, 2006, Sr. Mary Stephen DeCesare died at Mohun Health Care Center. She was born in Steubenville, OH, on May 1, 1914, to Pascal and Mary (DeLorenzo) DeCesare. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1932 and made her Profession of Vows in 1934. Sister was principal and teacher at Blessed Sacrament School in Wintersville, OH (1959-65); Holy Name School in Steubenville, OH (1968-69); and at St. Anne School in Santa Fe, NM (1975-77).
Sr. Mary Stephen earned a BS from St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University) and an MS in Education from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. Sister ministered in the following grade schools: St. Aloysius, Wilmerding, PA (1934-42); St. Francis de Sales, McKees Rocks, PA (1942-45); St. Lawrence O'Toole, Pittsburg, PA (1945-54); St. Peter, Steubenville, OH (1954-59); St. Anne, Santa Fe, NM (1965-68, 1969-77); St. William, East Pittsburgh, PA (1977-80); and St. Thomas School, Columbus, OH (1980-85).
Sister was preceded in death by brothers Anthony, Vincent (Jimmy), Dominic, Alfonso, Guido, and Louis; a half-brother Alfred; and by sisters Rose Antonucci, Christine Di Gregory and Helen Morelli. She is survived by sister-in-law Rose De Cesare, nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Sr. Mary Stephen retired and did volunteer tutoring at Holy Rosary School, Steubenville (1985-89) before coming to the Motherhouse and subsequently to Mohun Health Care Center in 1996.
