Mary Hugh Dorr, OP

On Tuesday, October 10, 2006, Sr. Mary Hugh Dorr died at Mohun Health Care Center. She was born in Batesville, OH, on November 26, 1913, to Hugh and Pauline (Fisher) Dorr. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1932 and made her Profession of Vows in 1933.
Sr. Mary Hugh earned a BS from St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University) and an MA in art and ceramics from the Ohio State University. She ministered in many schools during her long life as a religious Sister:

Before retiring, Sr. Mary Hugh ministered to the elderly at Nazareth Towers in Columbus, OH, from 1974 to 1986. After retiring, Sr. Mary Hugh did community service and tutored at St. Mary of the Springs before coming to live at Mohun Health Care Center in 1993, where she also served as a seamstress and volunteer for several years.
Sister was well known for her artistic ability and enhanced the former chapel at the Motherhouse with her Stations of the Cross, which are now displayed in the passageway connecting the Motherhouse and Mohun Health Care Center. This past summer, in a state level art and writing exhibition at the annual conference of the Association of Ohio Philanthropic Homes, Housing, and
Services for the Aging (AOPHA), Sr. Mary Hugh Dorr was awarded a second-place ribbon for her pencil sketching "Portrait of Rachel."
Sister was preceded in death by brothers Hugh and John. She is survived by brother Paul and his wife Nancy of Florida, sister-in-law Alice Dorr of Arizona, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
