Sr. Vivian Kessler, OP

November 18, 1915 – February 17, 2006

I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I shall live.

On Friday, February 17, 2006, Sr. Vivian Kessler died at Mohun Health Care Center. She was born in Lancaster, OH, on November 18, 1915, to Thomas and Sarah (Snider) Kessler. Sister entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1936 and made her Profession of Vows in 1938.

Sr. Vivian received a B.A. from St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University); an M.A. in Theology from Providence College, Providence, RI; and an M.A. in Guidance/Counseling from the University of Dayton. Sister taught at St. Anthony, Steubenville, OH (1938-1939); St. Brendan, Braddock, PA (1939); St. Aloysius, Wilmerding, PA (1939-46);Catholic Central High School, Steubenville, OH (1946-53); St. Thomas School, Braddock, PA (1953-58); St. Bernard Parish, Levittown, NY (1958-59); St. Lawrence O’Toole, Pittsburgh, PA (1959-61); De Sales High School, Columbus, OH (1961-62); St. Thomas District High School, Braddock, PA (1962-65); St. Mary High School, New Haven, CT (1965-75); St. Vincent Ferrer High School, New York City (1975-78); and Newark Catholic High School (1978-79). She served the Congregation as Activities Director at Mohun Health Care Center from 1979-1988 and coordinated the volunteers during that period.

Sister was preceded in death by brothers Marcellus, William and Thomas. She is survived by five sisters, Dominican Sisters Venard and Mary Carol of Columbus, Elizabeth Franklin of Wisconsin, and Ruth Kessler and Agnes Cramer of Lancaster. Sr. Vivian ministered at the St. Francis-St. George Hospital in Cincinnati from 1988 until 1998 (now part of Mercy Health Systems) as an information clerk and in the volunteer office. She ministered to the elderly at Nazareth Towers in Columbus, OH, from 1998 until 1999 before retiring to the Motherhouse. She became a resident of Mohun Health Care Center in 2005.
