On Friday, June 2, 2006, Sr. Barbara Jean Welker died at Mohun Health Care Center. She was born in Lancaster, Ohio, on November 5, 1939 to Frank and Mary (Walker) Welker. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1957 and made her Profession of Vows in 1959. Sister served as principal at St. James the Less, Columbus, OH (1972-76); at St. Thomas Aquinas, Zanesville, OH (1976-80); and at Holy Rosary, Steubenville, OH (1982-85).
Sr. Barbara Jean earned a BS from St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University); an MS from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA; and a Certificate from the School of Applied Theology in Berkeley, CA. In the Columbus Diocese, she ministered at St. James the Less (1961-62, 1968-69, 1972-76); Our Lady of Peace (1962-65); St. Francis (1969-71); Holy Name (1971-72); and St. Philip (1980-82). Sister also ministered in one of the congregation's missions at St. Anthony, Dixon, NM (1965-68). Sr. Barbara Jean also ministered as administrator at Mohun Health Care Center (1987-96) and a residential councilor at Girls Hope in Baden, PA (1996-2002).
She is survived by a brother, Jerry, and two sisters, Mary Kay Steinbach and Joyce Voellinger, and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She retired to the Motherhouse in 2003 and served the congregation in the Mohun Gift Shop for a while before eventually coming to live Mohun Health Care Center in 2005.
