Sr. Irma Walker, OP
April 24, 1908 - December 31, 2007

On Monday, December 31, 2007, Sr. Irma Walker died at Mohun Health Care Center. She was born in Somerset, OH, on April 24, 1908, to Philip and Sophia (Kulp) Walker. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1928 and made her Profession of Vows in 1929. Sister served as principal at Abiquiu Public Grade School, Abiquiu, NM (1947-48) and at St. Anthony, Dixon, NM (1948-49).
Sr. Irma received her B.S. from St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University). She ministered at Holy Name, Columbus, OH (1929-35, 1940-42); St. Clare, Grosse Pointe, MI (1935-36, 1949-54); St. Mary, Lancaster, OH (1936-38, 1960-64); St. Lawrence, Pittsburgh, Pa (1938-39);St. Francis, Columbus, OH (1939-40, 1964-66); St. Thomas, Zanesville, OH (1943-46); St. Thomas, Abiquiu, NM (1946-47, 1954-57); St. William, East Pittsburgh, PA (1957-58); Seven Sorrows, Middletown, PA (1958-59); Sacred Heart, Coshocton, OH (1959-60); and St. Francis, Newark, OH (1966-73). Sister served as music teacher while at Sacred Heart in Coshocton and led the choir while at St. William in East Pittsburgh.
Sister was preceded in death by her brothers Joseph, Albert and Russel and Dominican Sisters Elise (Elizabeth) and Rose (Sophia) and her sister Rose. Among her nieces and nephews is Dominican Sister Rita Walker. Sr. Irma served as a Pastoral Minister at St. Francis, Newark, OH from 1973 to 1995 before retiring to the Motherhouse where she did community service until her entrance to Mohun Health Care Center in 1999.
