On Monday, January 1, 2007, Sr. Mary Luke Baverso died at Mohun Health Care Center. She was born in Braddock, PA, on May 24, 1922, to Francis and Josephine (Grande) Baverso. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1940 and made her Profession of Vows in 1942.
Sr. Mary Luke ministered in food service to the Dominican Fathers at the Dominican House of Studies, River Forest, IL (1942-46, 1947-49) and to the Dominican Sisters at St. Mary of the Springs (1946-47, 1949-56); St. Vincent Ferrer, New York City (1956-57); and Mohun Health Care Center (1967-69). She also shared her gift in the culinary arts with students and faculty at Mary Immaculate School, Ossining , NY (1957-67, 1969-75); St. Thomas School, Braddock (1975-84); St. Albert, Pittsburgh (1984-86); and Dominican Academy, New York City (1986-2000). She was well known and appreciated for her expertise in the kitchen. After her retirement, she continued working in community service at the Motherhouse before coming to Mohun Health Care Center in 2005.
Sr. Mary Luke was preceded in death by brothers John and Joseph (Dominican Priests), Philip, Peter, Louis, and Anthony, by her sister Anne, and by nieces and nephews.
