On Tuesday, January 16, 2007, Sr. Marie Rosaire McCarthy died at Mount Carmel East Hospital. She was born in Schenectady, NY, on May 19, 1917, to Luke and Marie Agnes (Blake) McCarthy. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1940 and made her Profession of Vows in 1941.
Sr. Marie Rosaire earned a BA from St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University) and an MA from Hunter College of New York. She ministered in a variety of areas to the Church and to the Congregation in her long life. She taught at St. Mary Academy, New Haven, CT (1942-43); Catholic Central, Steubenville, OH (1943-46); St. Vincent Ferrer, New York, NY (1950-51); Dominican Academy, New York, NY (1959-62); and served as Library Administrator at St. Andrew, Flushing, NY (1976-80). Sr. Marie Rosaire also ministered as secretary for the Erskine Lecture Series at St. Mary of the Springs (1946-50); as Registrar at St. Mary of the Springs College (1951-56); and as Registrar at Albertus Magnus College, New Haven, CT (1956-59). For the Congregation, Sr. Marie Rosaire served the motherhouse as Procurator (1962-78) and Director of Maintenance (1980-90) and worked on the Congregational Staff in various capacities from 1980 through her retirement in 1998. At that time, she was known particularly for her role as Fleet Manager, coordinating car assignments and maintenance from 1990 to 1998. After retiring, Sr. Marie Rosaire volunteered in community service at the Motherhouse before coming to Mohun Health Care Center in 2006.
Sr. Marie Rosaire was preceded in death by her brother John and sisters Joan Barry and Betty Anne Johnson. She is survived by nieces and nephews.
The viewing will be in the Motherhouse on Friday, January 19, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. A Vigil Service of Remembrance will take place from 4:30 to 5:30pm that day with the wake continuing until 6:30pm. The funeral liturgy will be on Saturday at 9:00am followed by burial in St. Joseph 's Cemetery.
