Lucille Stewart, OP

On Thursday, June 14, 2007, Sr. Lucille Stewart died at Mohun Health Care Center. She was born in Toledo, Ohio, on December 24, 1906, to Harold and Cecelia (Walters) Stewart. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1924 and made her Profession of Vows in 1926.
Sr. Lucille earned a BS from St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University) then went on to teach at schools throughout Ohio and elsewhere. In Ohio, she ministered at St. Mary, Lancaster (1926-27, 1969-70); St. Francis, Columbus (1927-28, 1932-34); St. Francis, Newark (1928-32, 1939-47); St. Thomas, Columbus (1934); St. Mary of the Springs Academy (1937); Blessed Sacrament, Newark (1937-39); Sacred Heart HS, Coshocton (1954-57); Catholic Central, Steubenville (1957-58); St. Mary, Marietta (1958-60); St. Thomas, Zanesville (1960-61); St. James the Less (1961-65); Holy Trinity, Somerset (1965-67); and Blessed Sacrament, Wintersville (1967-68). At Our Lady of Peace in Columbus, Sr. Lucille served as principal from 1947 to 1954. She also ministered at St. Anne in Santa Fe, NM (1968-69). In addition to her ministry in education, Sr. Lucille served her Sisters at the Motherhouse as Assistant Procurator (1936-37) and ministered to the elderly and sick in St. Mary Parish, Lancaster (1969-1993) before retiring to Mohun Health Care Center in 1993.
During her many years of service to the poor, the sick, and the elderly, Sr. Lucille received numerous civic awards and honors. In 1976, she received a civic citation plaque from the Jaycees and in 1987 she received the Edward D. Jones & Company Heart of Gold Award. In recognition of her founding the Fairfield County Meals Program, the Fairfield County Committee on Aging inducted her into the Central Ohio Senior Citizen Hall of Fame. In 1991, she was selected to be the Grand Marshall in the Lancaster Area Fourth of July Parade, one of many honors she received during her years in Lancaster, Ohio .
Sr. Lucille is survived by close cousins Lucille Bunfill, Dorothy Burcu, Jane De Long, Mary Sweet and Leona Walters as well as many other relative and friends.
