On Saturday, November 15, 2008, Sr. Maria Arnold died at Mohun Health Care Center. She was born in Marietta, Ohio, on March 16, 1915, to John and Virginia (Schilling) Arnold. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1933 and made her Profession of Vows in 1936.
Sr. Maria earned a BS from St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University) and an MSEd in Library Science from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She taught at St. Frances, McKees Rocks, PA (1936-37); St. Lawrence, Pittsburgh, PA (1937-45, 1954-60); St. Clare, Grosse Pointe, MI (1945-49, 1960-62); Holy Name, Steubenville, OH (1949-54); St. Francis, Newark, OH (1962-63); St. Mary, Marietta, OH (1963-64); and St. James the Less, Columbus, OH (1964-65). She also served as faculty librarian at Northwest Catholic, West Hartford, CT (1965-1977) and at Newark Catholic High, Newark, OH (1977-2000).
Sr. Maria was preceded in death by brothers William, George, Jerry, and Anthony; a sister Bertha; and brothers-in-law John Huck and Joseph Lang. She is survived by a brother James (Maglena); sisters Mary Lou Huck, Allene (Vincent) Huck, and Irene Lang; sisters-in-law Mildred (William), Catherine (George), Leora (Anthony), and Lillian (Jerry) Arnold. Sr. Maria will be greatly missed, especially, her niece Sr. Catherine Arnold, OP, of St. Mary of the Springs, and by cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
