On Monday, December 22, 2008, Sr. Augusta Barry died at Mohun Health Care Center. She was born in Zanesville, OH, on October 20, 1931, to William and Mildred (Stokely) Barry. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1949 and made her Profession of Vows in 1951. Sr. Augusta served her Dominican Sisters as a General Councilor from 1968 until 1974.
Sr. Augusta earned a BS from St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University), an MA in Religious Studies from the University of Dayton, and an MA in Guidance from the University of Notre Dame. As a teacher, she served at Holy Rosary, Steubenville, OH (1951-54); St. Gabriel, Columbus, OH (1954-55); Christ the King, Columbus, OH (1955-57); St. Jane de Chantal, Chicago, IL (1957-62); Northwest Catholic, West Hartford, CT (1974-75); and Catholic Central, Steubenville, OH (1976-77). She also ministered as principal at St. Francis Grade School, Newark, OH (1962-68) and in religious education offices at St. Francis Assisi Parish, Centerville, OH (1978-82) and Seton Parish, Pickerington, OH (1982-84). Sr. Augusta continued her ministry in education as she served in the role of Associate Director and later tutor at the Dominican Learning Center, Columbus. Other ministries brought Sr. Augusta to serve in supportive services at St. George Hospital, Cincinnati, OH (1977-78), and as Associate Director of SHARE in Columbus (1984-89); Director of Adair House in Zanesville (1989-90); a teacher at Muskingum Area Tech College, Zanesville, OH (1990-92); and Director of the Springs Press (2000-08).
Sr. Augusta was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by a brother, William, of Zanesville, and sisters Martha Mirgon of Powell and Elise Ann Berkshire of Marion, as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
