Mary Humbert Davis, OP

On Sunday, November 23, 2008, Sr. Mary Humbert Davis died at Mohun Health Care Center. She was born in Columbus, Ohio, on February, 2, 1918, to William and Gertrude (McDonald) Davis. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Sp rings in Columbus in 1936 and made her Profession of Vows in 1938.
Sr. Mary Humbert served as principal at Holy Trinity, Somerset, Ohio, from 1964 to 1965. She also ministered as Director of Programs for the Elderly for the Diocese of Columbus from 1975 until 1996. Some of her accomplishments in this capacity were helping to establish programs for the elderly in many parishes, co-founding the establishment of the free meals program housed in Holy Family School, and being instrumental in getting grants to open the Bishop Hartley Community Center. Sr. Mary Humbert was inducted into the Senior Citizens' Hall of Fame and was named to serve as area delegate to the 1981 White House Conference on Aging. In 1983 she received the Ohio Governor's Award, given annually to persons who have made outstanding contributions to society and to the State.
Sr. Mary Humbert earned a BS from St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University) and an MA in Guidance from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh. Her ministry included service in the following grade schools:

- St. Brendan, East Pittsburgh, PA (1966-67)
- St. Francis, Newark, OH (1969-72)
- St. James the Less, Columbus, OH (1972-75)
She retired and did supportive service at the Motherhouse before coming to Mohun Health Care Center in 1999.
Preceded in death by her parents and brothers William, Francis and Richard, Sr. Mary Humbert is survived by cousins, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
