Sr.
Marjorie Baird, OP
(Sr. Thomas More)
Diamond Jubilarian
60 years (August 14, 1944)
Sr. Marjorie Baird, OP, will celebrate 60 years as a Dominican Sister
this spring. When asked to sum up her thoughts on a lifetime in religious
life she pronounced it “all an adventure.”
Originally from St. Peter’s parish in Steubenville, Sister loved
her teaching years feeling that, “My constant fascination with the
works of God as the Creator was (and is) the bedrock of my ministry.”
While she served in towns spanning Pennsylvania and Ohio, she returned
again to her steel town on the Ohio in later years. She recalled teaching
at Central Catholic in years when her lab was mobile – meaning she
had to load her supplies on a cart and move it between classrooms to teach
her science classes!
By personal choice and community directive she studied and taught science
all her life, in elementary, high schools and colleges. Earning a Masters
in Zoology from The Ohio State University on a National Science Foundation
Scholarship, she used her classroom as “an opportunity to view the
wonders of God’s creation in all its intricacies and to share my
fascination with countless others.”
After her retirement, she was honored by West Virginia Northern Community
College, where she taught from 1981-96, as an outstanding Professor emeritus.
Now at the Dominican Motherhouse in Columbus she is content to be part
of the local community. When asked what she would say to someone considering
religious life she unabashedly answered “go for it!” Reflectively
she remarked, “My option to enter religious life and persevere in
it has provided my orientation and sustenance. All my life, I have lived
among women with the same ultimate goals I cherish. Religious life has
been a precious gift.”
