Sr.
Mary Anthony Schill, OP
Diamond Jubilarian
60 years (August 14, 1944)
Quiet, meticulous, and caring are words that would describe Sr. Mary
Anthony Schill to those that have had the privilege of being with her.
She came to the convent after study at Grace Martin’s secretarial
school and a few years in the work-a-day world, and taught the lessons
of a well-organized office to scores of students over the years.
Sr. Mary Anthony was a native of Wilmerding, a Pittsburgh suburb which
sent a close-knit handful of its natives to grace the halls of St. Mary’s.
For more than 30 years, Sr. Mary Anthony pursued advanced degrees at St.
Mary of the Springs College and Duquesne University, and taught in classrooms
from Pittsburgh and Steubenville to New York City. She returned to St.
Mary’s in 1977 to offer her secretarial skills to the administrative
offices of the congregation.
For 25 years, she faithfully served the development office and took to
her heart the many wonderful donors who assisted the congregation. Daily
in the motherhouse chapel, she continues to lead the prayerful petitions
with a remembrance for all the benefactors, living and deceased, whose
kindness and support has been so essential to the Dominican Sisters. She
never fails to remind the congregation of all those for whom they have
promised prayer. She kept the web of relationships for families and friends
of the sisters in her head as well as in her files. She carried on personal
correspondence with many of the donors and never failed to send a prompt
thank-you note. She is still serving as the treasurer of the local community.
When asked what she would say to someone considering religious life,
she unhesitatingly answered “Try it! I found religious life to be
a very happy life – it was all I expected and more.”
