Sr.
Ellen Bailie, OP
(Sr. Mary Paschal)
Golden Jubilarian
50 years (July 9, 1955)
She says, “The life has been a surprise – all along the way.
When I entered the convent, I thought of my relationship with God as primarily
vertical. Living out the life, I’ve discovered, has been about an
increasingly horizontal relationship.”
Sr. Ellen (Mary Paschal) Bailie is celebrating her Golden Jubilee this
year as a Dominican Sister of St. Mary of the Springs, Columbus, Ohio.
Born in New York City to Alexander and Agnes (Darragh) Bailie, of County
Antrim, Ireland, Ellen graduated from St. Vincent Ferrer Grammar School,
Dominican Academy, and Hunter College of the City of New York (B.A.: English)
before entering the Novitiate in 1953. She made her first profession of
vows in 1955 and her final profession in 1958. Later, she earned an M.A.
in English from Hunter College and a Ph.D. in English from Indiana University.
Sr. Ellen’s teaching ministry included St. Gabriel’s and
Bishop Watterson, Columbus; St. Mary, Lancaster; Newark Catholic; St.

University, The Ohio State University, and Capital University. She worked
as an editor at Learning Design Associates, Columbus, and is currently
