Golden Jubilarian
50 years (July 9, 1955)
Sr. Catherine (Mary Leonard) Burland is celebrating her Golden Jubilee
as a Dominican Sister of St. Mary of the Springs, Columbus, Ohio. Born
to Edward Francis and Helen Frances (Keney) Burland in New Haven, CT,
Catherine entered the Novitiate at St. Mary of the Springs in 1953 and
made Final Profession in 1958. She attended St. Mary Elementary and High
School in New Haven and earned a B.S. in Education at the College of St.
Mary of the Springs (Ohio Dominican University).
Sr. Catherine taught at Holy Rosary and St. Peter, Steubenville, OH;
St. Andrew, Flushing, NY; Our Lady of Peace and St. James the Less, Columbus,
OH; and St. Clare de Montefalco, Grosse Pointe, MI. She has also been
a member of the tutorial program at St. Mary, New Haven, and the Springs
Learning Center, Columbus. Sister served in Mohun Health Care Center Support
Services as Sacristan. She is certified in Clinical Pastoral Ministry
and also serves as Archivist for Al-Anon.
Sr. Catherine describes herself as “compassionate, determined,
and grateful.” She explains that “through prayer and guidance,
I’ve been able to surrender my life totally to the Lord.”
