Golden Jubilarian
50 years (July 9, 1955)
Sr. Mary Laurene Valdez, celebrates her Golden Jubilee in 2005, commemorating
50 years as a Dominican Sister.
A native of Dixon, New Mexico, Sr. Mary Laurene came to Columbus for
her college education and then served at St. Mary (Lancaster, Ohio) in
the 1957-58 school year. But then she was assigned to return to New Mexico,
where she has lived and ministered ever since. She served at St. Anne’s
school in Santa Fe for 40 consecutive years until its closing in 1998.
She then was invited to teach the second grade at All Saints Catholic
School in Raton, New Mexico, where she served through this past school
year before retiring.
During her 48 years teaching, Sr. Mary Laurene was nominated Teacher
of the Year twice and received numerous awards including a recent award
for 45 years in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe.
