Sr.
Mary Lawrence Caniff, OP
Diamond Jubilarian
60 years (August 14, 1946)
A Steubenville, Ohio, native, Sr. Mary Lawrence Caniff was surrounded by Dominicans throughout her childhood. She grew up in Holy Name parish, attending the parish grade school and graduating from Catholic Central High School, with Springs Dominicans as teachers throughout. It seemed a natural move when she entered the Noviate at St. Mary of the Springs in 1944 and made her first profession of vows two years later.
Just after her first profession, Sr. Mary Lawrence began teaching the second grade, and she continued teaching in first and second grade classrooms for most of her teaching career. Those years brought her to various schools and parishes – in Columbus, Newark, Steubenville, and Zanesville, Ohio; Wilmerding, Braddock, McKees Rocks, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Brooklyn and Ossining in the state of New York, among other locations. For a short period, Sr. Mary Lawrence worked in ministry to the elderly outside Pittsburgh, but then returned to the field of education, serving as a librarian in her hometown of Steubenville at Holy Rosary School from 1988 to 1995.
That year, Sr. Mary Lawrence returned to St. Mary of the Springs to minister at Mohun Health Care Center as Assistant Director of Resident Life. She continued to serve her Sisters in community service work for the Congregation until her retirement in 2003. As she celebrates 60 years of life as a Dominican Sister, she is grateful for the opportunity to have taught so many children and served in so many places through the years. |
