Sr. Gilmary McCabe, OP

Golden Jubilarian
50 years (July 9, 1956)

Her father a New York City detective, Sr. Gilmary McCabe originally wanted to work in law or law enforcement, and imagined herself battling crime in the city. But, she says, the still voice calling her to religious life was always in the back of her mind. This past year, she celebrated 50 years since she answered that call and became a Dominican Sister of St. Mary of the Springs.

A 1954 graduate of Dominican Academy in New York, she says the Sisters there instilled in her a love of education, and she has cherished her lifelong work in the field. Sr. Gilmary taught French, English, and history at various grade levels in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York schools before serving as principal of St. Vincent Ferrer High School from 1980 through 1997. Since that time, she has been in New Haven, Connecticut, serving at Albertus Magnus College in curriculum coordination and student advising.

"I have loved all my ministries and have found them all rewarding," shares Sr. Gilmary. She finds her current work at Albertus to be especially exciting, with each new academic year bringing in new freshmen with new personalities and different needs. Every year, she works with first-year students to help them become acclimated to college life and to be sure they are familiar with the services and offerings of Albertus.

In addition to her other responsibilities at the college, Sr. Gilmary is the faculty athletic representative, acting as a liaison for student athletes and helping to insure their coursework remains on track during the sports seasons. She is particularly appreciative of this role that links two of her great loves: academia and sports. Sr. Gilmary is a regular attendee of all home games for Albertus, and can even be spotted cheering on the team at occasional away games. Asked to name which athletic event she most enjoys attending, this consummate sports enthusiast lists soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, baseball....

Sr. Gilmary's dedication to education, love of her students, and passion for sports and other joys of life are surpassed only by her faith and love of God. "God has been good to me," she shares. "I have been very lucky and very happy - I am blessed to be a Dominican Sister."
