Sr.
Teresa Miriam McEnaney, OP
Diamond Jubilarian
75 years (July 10, 1932)
When she entered the convent at the tender age of 16, her parents were heartbroken, but felt they didn't want to interfere with God's will for their daughter. Seventy-five years of vowed religious life later confirm that becoming a Dominican Sister was indeed God's plan for Sr. Teresa Miriam McEnaney's life.
Upon her first profession of vows in 1932, Sr. Teresa Miriam embarked on a life journey of teaching and school administration that brought her to various corners of the country. From Ohio to Connecticut and from New York to Michigan, Sr. Teresa Miriam was a classroom teacher for every grade from second through eighth, and taught English at the high school level. She served as vice principal at Northwest Catholic High School in West Hartford, CT (1962-69), and as principal at Holy Name grade school in Columbus, OH (1948-54), St. Vincent Ferrer High School in New York, NY (1969-1977), and St. Mary High School in New Haven, CT (1977-81). Bringing her wealth of educational background to new academic endeavors, Sr. Teresa Miriam returned to Northwest Catholic in 1981 to serve as an academic guidance counselor for six years and then served as alumnae director for St. Vincent Ferrer for 16 years beginning in 1987. In 2003, she retired and moved to the Motherhouse of St. Mary of the Springs, where she resides today and remains active as a volunteer in the Finance Office of her congregation.
Through it all, Sr. Teresa Miriam says she has remained steadfast in her commitment by keeping her focus on God – the source of her vocation, her strength in times of trial, and the reason for all she does. "In any life, there are demands and struggles, but through the grace of God, you are empowered to do whatever you need to do," she shares. "I've witnessed a lot of changes in my life, especially in religious life, over the years. But while the externals have changed, God remains the same. If you keep your focus on God, you'll be in good hands." Sr. Teresa Miriam is grateful for her long life of service, and her continued vitality at age 93 is a remarkable testament to her vocation and faith.
