Sr. Carolyn Thurn, OP
Golden Jubilarian
50 years (July 9, 1957)
A Columbus native who grew up in St. Mary Parish, Sr. Carolyn Thurn this year celebrates 50 years of vowed religious life. After graduating from St. Mary of the Springs Academy in 1955, Sr. Carolyn joined the community of Dominican Sisters who taught her there. "I was very impressed by the joy and apparent holiness of the Sisters, who were also wonderful teachers," she comments about her experience at the Academy and her decision to enter the convent. She made her first profession of vows at St. Mary of the Springs in 1957 and has never looked back.
Sr. Carolyn was initially a teacher, but in 1977, she changed ministry paths and began working as a nursing aide at Mohun Health Care Center, the infirmary at St. Mary of the Springs. She went on to earn a nursing degree and spent the rest of her ministerial career in health care. In 1992, Sr. Carolyn returned to minister at Mohun Health Care Center, where she continues to serve today after 15 years. "Maintaining a positive spirit at Mohun is very important to me, for the sake of our Sisters and priests who reside there," she explains. "The dedication, kindness, and hard work of the employees never cease to amaze me and I feel privileged to be a member of the team."
In reflecting on her Golden Jubilee, Sr. Carolyn shares, "Although many changes have taken place in the Church and the world during the past 50 years, the essence of religious life is the same. Our consecration to God and the Church by the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience is nourished by prayer and expressed by our ministries of preaching, teaching, and healing." |
