Sr. Teresita Watson, OP
Golden Jubilarian
50 years (July 9, 1957)
"By the time I was in the 11th grade, my decision to enter the Dominican Sisters had been made, with the encouragement of both of my parents," shares Sr. Teresita Watson. Today celebrating 50 years as a Dominican Sister of St. Mary of the Springs, she credits prayer and her sense of humor, along with the strength and encouragement of her Sisters, with sustaining her in religious life over the years.
Embracing a ministry of education since the beginning of her religious life, Sr. Teresita says that the children she has taught over the years – especially the kindergartners – have helped sustain her enthusiasm and given her a sense of purpose in her ministry. She has served in elementary education for the past 48 years in New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.
Sr. Teresita earned a BS in Elementary Education from the College of St. Mary of the Springs (now Ohio Dominican University), an MS in Education from Hunter College (New York City), and Certification in Montessori Education from St. Nicholas Training Center of London, England, presented through the College of New Rochelle, New York. Last year, Sr. Teresita celebrated her 23rd year at Sacred Heart School in Coshocton, Ohio, where she has been interim principal, first-grade teacher, and, for the past seven years, kindergarten teacher.
"I love being able to teach God’s children, and I am very proud that many of my former students have kept in touch with me," Sr. Teresita says. "The students have used their foundation in education to better not only themselves but also their families, community, and, most of all, the Church."
Last year, Sacred Heart School observed its 100th anniversary of educating the children of Coshocton through the ministry of the Springs Dominicans. Sr. Teresita has been an important part of this legacy of education, having ministered there for almost one quarter of this century of service. |
