Abolishing the Death Penalty

We, the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs, Columbus, Ohio join with Pope John Paul II, the United States Catholic Bishops, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious in calling for the abolishing of the death penalty in the United States.  "We oppose the death penalty not just for what it does to those guilty of heinous crimes, but for what it does to all of us:  it offers the tragic illusion that we can defend life by taking life." (Most Reverend Joseph A. Fiorenza, President of the National Catholic Conference of Catholic Bishops, January 28, 1999)  Passed June, 1999

On April 18, 2005 Dominicans for Justice and Peace joined with other organizations to deliver a statement before the UN Commission on Human Rights to call for an end to the use of the death penalty. To read the statement click here.
