Issue: Trafficking in Human PersonsTrafficking in human persons is the 21st century's slavery. It is estimated that as many as 17,000 individuals are trafficked each year into the United States to work in the sex trade or as slave labor. Women and children have been forced to work in prostitution rings, while men, women, and children have been forced into different types of manual labor, without pay or protection. Internationally, the numbers of trafficked ranged from 700,000 to as high as four million. The United States Catholic Conference of Bishops places the elimination of trafficking as an important public policy priority. The Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs along with other Dominican Congregations, and other Congregations of Women Relgious have set education and action as a goal in response to this issue.
