Issue: Nuclear WeaponsIn his World Day of Peace 2008 message, Pope Benedict XVI wrote, “In difficult times such as these, it is truly necessary for all persons of good will to come together to reach concrete agreements aimed at an effective demilitarization, especially in the area of nuclear arms. At a time when the process of nuclear non-proliferation is at a stand-still, I feel bound to entreat those in authority to resume with greater determination negotiations for a progressive and mutually agreed dismantling of existing nuclear weapons. In renewing this appeal, I know that I am echoing the desire of all those concerned for the future of humanity.” The issue of the use of nuclear weapons has been with us since World War II. The U.S. Catholic Bishops wrestled with this threat in their 1983 document The Challenge of Peace: God’s Promise and Our Response. To read this document, click here. Today, twenty-five years later, humankind is faced with the reality that terrorists are seeking to acquire unsecured weapons and materials; some countries still are expanding their nuclear arsenals, and other nations are pursuing membership in the nuclear club. Many organizations continue to work toward nuclear disarmament and non-violent responses to conflicts between nations. The United States Catholic Bishops have issued numerous statements on the issue of nuclear weapons and disarmament. To read these statements click here. The following sites are only a sampling of the many organizations offering information on the issue of nuclear weapons and nuclear disarmament: For the Union of Concerned Scientists click here.
